Your Feeling on the Matter 150 words min
Hi this assignment is like the previous ones you did.
Your Feeling on the Matter
It is no secret that our nation and our public conversation about LGBT matters has changed in the last, not only 100 years, but more drastically in the last 20 years. This latest generation of kids have grown up in the most accepting and diverse American culture to date with respect to LGBT individuals, their families, and the issues they stand for.
This week we watched the dramatized version of The Laramie Project. A play that was written to expose and relay the stories and horrific events of that day that happened to Mathew Shepard. As mentioned before, this is a play that is performed all over the United States. This play, like so many other plays that deal with LGBT themes and issues have been coming more and more to the fray of our national and public conversation. We have seen the rise of gay and lesbian characters in all of our entertainment including TV, film, and of course the Theatre. We see how the last 20 years of LGBT pointed entertainment has shaped the political discourse of our nations power brokers. We are changing laws and shaping society to a far greater degree in even the last 5 years so as to tackle the discrimination against this particular group. Gay marriages are now legal all over the states and those that would decry the LGBT lifestyle as something to be covered or shunned for cultural or religious reasons are now beginning to be seen as radical and out of touch where just 10-15 years ago those same voices held the majority of political power in our nation. How far we have come from even prop 8 in California that would have made sure it remain illegal for same sex marriage in the state. In 2008 it was passed by the voters. It was made null and void when the supreme court made same sex marriage legal in all 50 states in 2015.
The waves of change are boundless and can be seen almost daily as we here more reports of judges, states, and the federal government ending discrimination all over the nation.
Here is the question(s) I have……
In light of the play you have now watched, the articles you have read, your research and your own general awareness and knowledge of the state of our national discourse with respect to LGBT issues:
Do you feel that it has been a positive 15 to 20 years for Gay and Lesbian issues, their families and the way we feel about them?
Do you feel that we have moved in a positive way as a nation since the Mathew Shepard event in 1998? Why or why not?
How and why do you believe we have changed so quickly in our society toward the LGBT community?
Have you seen any change in your own life with how you feel or behave toward Gay and Lesbian individuals?
Would you watch a play or view a film or television that highlights LGBT themes and values? Why or why not?
START A THREAD WITH AT LEAST 150 WORDS.

1. Do you feel that it has been a positive 15-20 years for Gay and Lesbian issues, their families and the we feel about them?
I think in some ways it has been positives, but in the religious spectrum it has left a negative impact. The church has been resistant towards them. The majority of Gay and Lesbian come from religious families. Some families are not supportive and are being shunned by their families. Some are even being kicked out of their homes. When my friend came out to her family, she got kicked out of the house. Till this day she has not return home or has not spoken to her family. However, during recent times, Pope Francis, clearly supports the LGBT community. Pope Francis has been very clear that the Church has to be open to walking with anyone, acknowledging that we are all sinful and tempted to sin. In other words, nobody is perfect, and the Church is here to serve as a kind of ?field hospital? for the wounded (all of us). He has very clearly said this includes transgender people.
2. Do you feel that we have moved in a positive way as a nation since the Mather Shepard event in 1998? Why or why not?
As a nation I think we have come a long way. There are laws that have been passed in favor of protecting the LBGT community. People are now more open to coming out. We have great famous influencers such as Ellen Degeneres and many more. Over the years as a nation the LGBT community has grown and been supportive to those who are coming out.
3. How and why do you believe we have changed so quickly in our society toward the LGBT community?
The media has greatly influenced on the way we feel towards the LGBT community. Also famous people and plays have contribute towards the movement. Especially famous people such as Ellen Degeneres. She has proved to everybody in the LGBT community if she can make it, anybody else can do it too! Her show has tremendously impacted the way we see LGBT individuals. They all have a story to share. At the end of the day we are all human beings.
4. have you seen any change in your own life with how you feel or behave toward Gay and Lesbian individuals?
I have seen any changes in my own life. I grew up in the church and we were taught that gays and lesbian could not happen. I was taught it was a sin and to not talk to them. That always bother me. The way LGBT individuals live their life does not impact my lifestyle. Over time I have established empathy towards them. Everybody has a story no matter what size, gender, ethnicity, age, or occupation they come from; like I stated before WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS.
5. Would you watch a play or view a film or television that highlights LGBT themes and values? Why or why not?
I would watch a play or view a film that highlights LGBT themes and values. I am a human services major and in my major I work very closely with a diverse community. I really enjoy helping other people, but in order to that I have to understand where they come from. I believe that watching a film would really help me be more culturally competent.

Do you feel that it has been a positive 15 to 20 years for Gay and Lesbian issues, their families and the way we feel about them?
- Slightly. Same sex marriages and all the changes being made in the government with concerning gay individuals and overall, people having the bravery to put their business out in the open is letting people know that it is okay to be gay and let people accept you for who you are. Obviously, there’s other people in the LGBT community who are doing things but we still have a long way to go with changing our attitudes towards the LGBT community.
Do you feel that we have moved in a positive way as a nation since the Mathew Shepard event in 1998? Why or why not?
- There will always be people who are one-track minded and people who will have hate in their hearts towards the gay community but, I feel that it is slightly more positive due to the sole fact that it is out there in the open and everyone is exposed to it whether it be seeing couples on the streets to watching movies or television that feature LGBT individuals. Overall, we as a society still have a long way to go to accepting individuals for who they are and not blindly targeting someone and judging someone off of one little thing.
How and why do you believe we have changed so quickly in our society toward the LGBT community?
- I think that we as a society may still have reservations towards the LGBT community but I feel that social media and news outlets giving them exposure is helping put it out in the light and telling the world that it is okay to be gay.
Have you seen any change in your own life with how you feel or behave toward Gay and Lesbian individuals?
- I actually have a family members who are gay/ lesbian. Ever since I was young i’ve been taught never to judge someone based off of something like that so at the end of the day it doesn’t really affect me nor do I care if an individual is gay/ lesbian. If they’re a good person that’s all that I really care about.
Would you watch a play or view a film or television that highlights LGBT themes and values? Why or why not?
- I personally would watch anything with a good story line. I’ve actually watched a few movies that have highlighted LGBT themes and values such as “Love, Simon” and “Blue is the warmest color.”
