Write a Poem
Six Ways to Jump Start a New Poem
At the end of Chapter 29, there is a series of options on how to ?jump start a poem.? The key (as it says) is to not sit and stare at a blank piece of paper. Please choose one of the options and follow the instructions listed in Chapter 29. Post it to the discussion board and let us know which option you chose.
1. Let other poets get you in the mood. Read 10 poems from chapter 28.
2. If you have been keeping a journal, use it.
3. Draw on your five senses. List very briefly those objects you saw today that you will remember five years from now.
4. Recall some of the most vivid experiences you have had in the past two years.
5. Do the same for the dramatic events of your childhood. Did any of them change your attitude? Did they help you see things in a different light?
6. Now ask yourself some tough questions about your own life. When were you truly frightened? What would frighten you then frighten you now? Were you ever deeply ashamed? As you look back, was the shame justified?
7. Consider your friends and relations. Can you see in any of them contradictions that are worth exploring? When dealing with your relationship with others, look closely to see if there is some type of ambivalence worth developing.
