Upper Body: The Shoulder
Upper Body: The Shoulder |
The shoulder is very unique as it is considered to be the most movable joint of our body. On the downside; however, the shoulder is very unstable and prone to many injuries. Injuries to the shoulder can have a multitude of causes that often result in sprains, strains, separations, dislocations, tendinitis, torn rotator cuffs, fractures, and arthritis, just to name a few.
After reading Chapters 9 and 10 in your course textbook, please watch the FINA Prevention of Shoulder Injuries in Aquatic Sports (Links to an external site.) video and review the NIH?s Questions and Answers About Shoulder Problems (Links to an external site.) website.
Next, select one sports activity (other than swimming) that frequently causes shoulder injury and address the following elements:
- Discuss the structure and function of the shoulder girdle and shoulder joint and how your selected activity impacts that functioning.
- Explain how the trunk is relevant in the movement of the shoulder in general and specific to your selected activity.
Include two scholarly sources to support your research and findings (one may be your course text). All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words.
Guided Response: Respond to at least two peers. Compare and contrast your research relating to sports and non-sports related injuries to the shoulder to the research and findings of your peers. Share two preventive measures or exercises with your peers which help prevent potential injuries to the shoulder (you may select exercises featured in the video or share ideas of your own). Ensure each peer response contains a minimum of 100 words.
