The Privilege

One of the greatest sources of misunderstandings throughout social life, and why it’s very important to try to see the world from the perspective of others, is the tendency for privilege and lack of privilege to shape how individuals and groups perceive social reality. Generally speaking, it is very common for people to become desensitized to their privileges, and take them for granted to the point that they are oblivious to the plight of less fortunate people, who are denied those opportunities. For example, it can be very difficult for a child from a stable home to imagine the distractions and stressors that less fortunate children have to endure, this in turn can make it difficult for the more privileged child to understand why less privileged schoolmates struggle academically or behaviorally, leading to judgment and even prejudice.

Write a 650-word paper discussing an issue from any aspect of social life, in which you feel an individual or group misunderstands another because of a difference in privileges (feel free to use a personal experience.)

Include the following:

• Discuss the differences in privilege involved.
• What misunderstandings seem to be occurring?
