Weakness:
Financial Performance
The company reported weak financial performance during the year. The company may not able to
generate sufficient cash flows to fund its expansion or protect it from competitive pressures. In FY2017,
Tiffany reported revenue of US$4,001.8 million as compared to US$4,104.9 million in FY2016,
representing a decline of 3%. This was primarily due to decrease in net sales in Americas and Europe. It
was also attributed to weak market demand, competitive pricing pressures, unfavorable currency impacts,
and change in the Supplies sales model. Decrease in revenue was also driven by 5% decline in stores
sales. In FY2016, the company?s operating income was decreased by 5.4 % from US$760 million in
FY2016 to US$721 in FY2017. Net income was also decreased by 3.3%.
Litigations
Tiffany with its global business operations is defendant in several litigations. Lawsuit filed against the
company could result in fines and penalties, which increase its operating costs. In February 2017, a
lawsuit was filed against the company by Lisa O?Rourke, an Ex-employee. Ms O’Rourke claims that, she
was pushed out of work after she had removed breasts and ovaries to avoid getting cancer. She alleges
that Tiffany discriminated against her as she carries a gene mutation for developing cancer. In May 2016,
the company was sued by Kristin Rightnour, an ex-employee of the company. Rightnour claimed that she
was fired and denied a US$42,000 bonus over a casual conversation she had with her colleagues for
making a comment that Jewish people killed Jesus in 2014 Easter holidays. She claimed that the
company gave her a less than favorable performance review
Threat:
Dependence on a Few Vendors
The company is dependent on a few diamond vendors to make its jewelry, which may affect its business
operations. A large part of Tiffany?s jewelry and non-jewelry offerings are made with diamonds,
gemstones and other precious metals. The company has observed a limitation in the supply of polished
diamonds, which has affected its jewelry production. Moreover, it could be unable to maintain a
comprehensive selection of diamonds in each retail location due to broad assortment of sizes, colors,
clarity grades and cuts demanded by customers. Due to limited diamond supply, the vendors are at liberty
to quote diamond prices. The company may not be able to find suitable alternatives to get polished
gemstones and precious metals on time, if any of these vendors are unable to supply the products on
favorable terms to it. Furthermore, any negative changes in the price of diamonds quoted by the
suppliers, could significantly affect the sales volume and profit margins of the company.
Expansion by Competitors
The rising competition in jewelry market may affect the company?s business operations. Tiffany operates
in a highly competitive market. It faces significant competition in all product lines, with some competitors
specializing in just one area in which Tiffany is active. Many of the company?s competitors have their own
distinct reputation for style, quality and expertise, and customer service, similar to Tiffany. Tiffany?s major
competitors include Blue Nile, Inc., DGSE Companies, Inc., Whitehall Jewelers Holdings Inc., Zale
Corporation and Signet Jewelers Limited.
While major competitors have undertaken expansion programs to match the growth rate, the market also
registered consolidation involving mergers and acquisitions. In February 2017, LVMH Moet Hennessy
Louis Vuitton SA announced to acquire minority stake in Italian eyewear maker, Marcolin SpA. In June
2016, Blue Nile opened its third Webroom at Tysons Corner Center mall in Fairfax County, Virginia, the
US. This acquisition will diversify its business and increase its international presence with new and
greater growth opportunities
