Explain how multiple systems interact to impact individuals:

A system is ?a set of elements that are orderly and interrelated to make a functional whole? (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016 p. 35). The individual is a system that ?entails biological, psychological, and social systems? (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016 p. 36). The ecosystem approach allows social workers to view what other systems an individual may be involved in and have a constant relationship with (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016). An ecomap can be drawn to view specific ?relationships and influences between individuals, families or collectives, and their ecological environment, including their social and support networks? (Kennedy, 2010 p. 1). Using an ecomap can help social work professionals with the assessment, planning, and intervention phases because it would show the positive and negative interactions an individual (Kennedy, 2010). According to Kennedy (2010), the ecomap is a tool used primarily to understand the person and their environment along with the different effects of each system that can have on that individual.

Explain how you, as a social worker, might apply a systems perspective to your work with Lester Johnson

Lester has been involved in a tragic car accident that has caused him to have ?limited cognition,? where he is unable to perform certain daily tasks or also known as activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014 p. 46). Before the accident, Lester was working as an electrician, involved with his church, lived on his own, and had close family relations (Plummer, Markis, & Brocksen, 2014). Looking at Lester?s multiple systems, we can create an ecomap of his micro/mezzo, mezzo, and macro systems that Lester is affected by and in constant interactions with, either it is positive or negative (Kennedy, 2010). We can see the different elements in each system to find Lester?s physical and mental needs, problems, and his strengths (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016). This can help me as a social worker know what issues to address, create solutions, and to most effective and appropriate options for Lester to use (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016).

Explain how you might apply a systems perspective to social work practice

A systems perspective can help social workers to have a visual of the different interactions an individual, family, group, or community may have with each other (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016). We must understand that the individual is a system and the micro/mezzo, mezzo, and macro systems are the different multiple systems that the person is in constant involvement with (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016). This means that we have to see the different negative and positive impacts each system may have on the person and how we can use this tool to assess, plan, and intervene to appropriately help the client with their needs, problems, and strengths (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
