Write a 6-page literary analysis of the connection between culture and identity in one of the texts we have read this session. The following questions will help you construct a supportable thesis. Your essay should be in MLA format and include a full works cited that is not part of the page count. The sources you used for your annotated bibliography are the ones included in the works cited. What is used to make that person or people’s identity (e.g., certain behaviors, self-presentation, use of language)?
o To what extent does the individual have control over his or her identity? To what extent does the individual’s gender, culture, and history influence his or her identity?
o What is the relationship between past and present in the text? Are the characters trying to connect with the past, recapture it, or distance themselves from it? Are they successful?

o Consider the pressure to adapt to a changing cultural environment versus the pressure to retain tradition. How do characters navigate this tension?
