Part 1

Research Project: Due: September 17, 2017 by 11:59 EST. A critical analysis of Media representation on disability and people with disabilities. Reflecting on the previous weeks’ readings and discussions the students will have an opportunity to research how the media, written and digital, such as Hollywood movies, TV news, programs and commercial endorsements, radio talk shows, magazines, newspapers, newsletters and the newest technological means of communications portray disability and persons with disabilities in reference to their characteristics and physical appearance, and their roles in the society. Your analysis will focus on a) how the media influences society’s perspectives toward disability and persons with disabilities, and b) if the media has added to the discrimination of persons with disabilities; or c) if the media, as it continues to evolve to be more inclusive, has improved the perception of disability and persons with disabilities.

Part 2

Applied Final Project: DUE DATES: Proposal Due on September 24, 2017 by 11:59 pm Eastern Time. Completed Project due on October 8, 2017 by 11:59 pm Eastern Time. The Instructor will respond to the students if clarification is needed or if the proposal idea is not a relevant topic and/or a good choice for the purpose of the course.

Part 3

Completed Applied Final Project is Due on: October 8, 2017 by 11:59 EST. For this assignment, each student will write a paper that involves either extensive interviews with a person with a disability or an application of the principles of this course to at least two current events involving disability and/or people with disabilities. In this paper, students will integrate information from class readings and discussions with what they learn from the interviews or additional readings. The paper will synthesize academic material with the experiences of a person(s) with a disability. As indicated above, a brief proposal that provides the subject to be discussed, the person to be interviewed or the books to be utilized will be due on September 24, 2017. If you would like to get started on your paper before then, your proposal may be submitted at any time. However, please do not begin work on your paper until your proposal has been approved.

Format Requirements for Research Project and Applied Final Project:

  • Font = 12 point; Times New Roman. Line spacing 2.0. If you do not adhere to this format, points will be deducted.
  • The paper will be 8 – 10 pages in length not including the cover page, abstract or references pages.
  • Please use in-text citations in American Psychological Association (APA) style, as shown in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. To review APA style, see http://www.umuc.edu/library/citationguides.html, or a manual on APA style. List all documents used in a bibliography at the end of your paper, and follow bibliographic formatting as shown in UMUC’s Guide to Writing and Research, or in the APA style guide mentioned above.
  • Be sure to use appropriate language; do NOT use colloquial language; this is an official written assignment.
  • Grammar and spelling are important to this assignment.
