Directions: The objective of our 2nd Response Paper is to be a standard five-paragraph essay (introduction paragraph + 3 body paragraphs + conclusion paragraph) assessing how Epicurus’ emphasis on how to best live the “happy life” applies to our own perceptions To do so, please follow the instructions and guidelines in each of the sections below as you compose your paper assignment

Introductory Remarks & Thesis Statement: Perhaps begin your paper by reflecting on your thoughts about Epicurus’ philosophies of happiness or about the idea of happiness overall After doing so, you should come up with your own definition for the concept of “happiness” (pick a synonym for this if you’d prefer) I don’t not care what the dictionary defines “happiness” as but what you can come up with creatively for yourself Maybe for you, if you’re like me, “happiness” comes from a feeling of accomplishment Maybe it comes from getting the attention of and praise from others etc This term (ie happiness) and your original definition of it become your paper’s thesis statement (the focal point to be supported for the rest of the paper)

Body Paragraphs: Open each Body Paragraph clearly stating one specific way you try or have tried to achieve your definition of happiness (Topic Sentence – for example, maybe you try to be/stay happy by not letting your emotions get the better of you) Follow that up with an instance and explanation /discussion of a time in your life when that method of achieving happiness occurred (Example and Analysis) Be sure to follow this process for each of your Body Paragraphs
