General requirements for the assessment
? Each group of four must prepare a 20 minute PowerPoint presentation on your chosen topic to
deliver in class
? All group members are expected to contribute equally to researching the topic and preparing the
? Each student in the group MUST deliver some of the presentation (i.e. you must ALL take a turn
in speaking).
? Present information to your peers that is beyond what they could read in the textbook. Your
textbook may be a good starting point, but you must show evidence of wider reading
(books/journals). You MUST have at least 3 references other than your textbook (or other
introductory textbooks).
? Use PowerPoint slides to illustrate the main points of the talk. Your slides should be prepared
according to good principles of design (e.g., visually attractive, appropriate font size, appropriate
amount of content on each slide).
? For moderation purposes, the presentation tutorials may be recorded via your classroom’s
EchoCentre recording system.
Choosing a topic and the components of the presentation
Your group presentation will highlight the application of psychological theory, principles, and
research to real-life events. At the beginning of your presentation, you will introduce a newspaper article
(either hardcopy or electronic) published between 2018 and the current year that raises an issue relevant
to one of the modules in the unit. The newspaper article provides the basis of a real-life example that you
will aim to relate to relevant psychological theory or principles. You will also be expected in the course of the
presentation to briefly describe relevant contemporary research in the area that you’re presenting on. Your
group will describe how these findings might be relevant to the real-life example you have raised during the
presentation, or other real-life examples that assist in illustrating your topic of discussion, thereby providing
an integrated presentation on a topic of the group’s choosing.
A few examples of topics that relate to each of the modules in the unit are:
Developmental psychology: factors that affect children’s development (e.g., maternal drinking/smoking,
environmental hazards); debate about the effect of parental employment and childcare on children;
domestic violence and its impact on children; gender roles; adolescent peer relationships and identity;
importance of staying mentally and physically active for healthy aging.
Learning: social modelling; rewards and punishments especially as related to trying to change people’s
behaviour (e.g., plain packaging for cigarettes)
Memory: eye witness testimony; memory and aging, disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia;
strategies for improving memory
Social psychology: examples of the impact of stereotypes; prejudice and discrimination; social influence /
peer pressure; obedience and conformity; cooperation and conflict between groups; attitudes and attitude
Personality: match between personality characteristics and occupations, cross cultural differences in
personality characteristics, infant temperament, and personality assessment for employment selection.
Motivation: need for achievement and success; eating behaviour and eating disorders; sexuality and sexual
How your presentation will be marked
The presentations will be assessed in class by your tutor according to the Marking Guidelines (see
last page). Each group will be given a mark out of 25. However, the mark that each individual gets for the
presentation will depend on their contribution to preparing the presentation.
Each member of the group must complete the SparkPLUS Peer and Self review of Group Work (See
assessments on Bb for more information. The Relative Performance Factor (RPF) is a weighting factor
determined using both the self and peer rating of a student’s contribution. It is used to change a team mark
for an assessment task into an individual mark as follows: Individual mark = team mark * Individual’s RPF.
Poor performing students (based on their peer’s feedback, can potentially lose up to 5 marks from their
presentation mark.
Accessing SparkPLUS + Instructions
1. You will only be able to enter the SparkPLUS system after Monday 13th May at 8.00am (week 12)
2. If you have not logged in before you will need to click on “forgotten your password”. You will then be asked
to create a password. It will take about 20 minutes to receive confirmation of this password in
your Curtin Student Email account. You only have to do this the first time you log on to the system.
3. Before you begin, please check that all of your group members are correct. If not, please
contact as soon as possible.
4. The first set of questions is a SELF REVIEW.
5. Once you click save, you will be taken to a new screen to review your 1st group member. You can check the
name on the TOP RIGHT or the VERY END of the screen. Continue this process until you have reviewed all group
6. You are permitted to re-enter and change your reviews up until the SparkPLUS system closes.
Missed SparkPLUS review period?
? Once the SparkPLUS system closes, it cannot be re-opened.
? You will not fail the assessment but you will have missed the chance to provide your peers with constructive

from their other group members.
A few suggestions to help make your group work experience a successful and enjoyable one:
? Print out and complete / store and update an electronic copy of the Checklist for the Presentation
Assignment detailed later in this outline – it will really help keep you and your group members on-
track for a great presentation!
? If you are holding regular meetings, make sure that someone takes notes for each meeting to record
what you discussed, what actions will be taken, and who is responsible for what tasks, and then
email this to all group members.
? Use social media / mobile communication to coordinate meetings/tasks with your peers if you are
not holding regular face-to-face meetings.
? Discuss how you are going to work as a group and how you are going to manage any conflicts
BEFORE they arise.
? Divide up the work equitably amongst all group members.
? Allow enough time to complete the task. It is clear to the audience when your presentation has been
rushed out at the last minute.
? The 15 minute time limit is strict, and your presentation will be stopped at the 15 minute mark, so
ensure your timing is on-track.
? And lastly, try to make your presentation interesting! Don’t be afraid to try to engage the audience.
Be creative and imaginative in the way you choose to present the material – it really helps build
enthusiasm for the content you’re describing.
