2017 Legislative Session
In the 2017 legislative session, the Texas congress passed and Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 4, which tells local governments they must enforce all immigration laws, which includes informing the federal government whenever they arrest someone they believe to be here illegally. Several cities in Texas have made it clear they have neither the manpower nor desire to enforce federal law. They say the issue should be dealt with by the feds. SB4 disagrees, arguing that the local police are the first line of defense in society and if a person is here illegally, they should be arrested for that crime. Refusing to do so will result in a loss of funds. Find a reputable source or two for each side and summarize the key arguments for each side. Lastly, if you like, you can throw in your two cents at the end. Just don’t let this become an opinion paper; it is a research-type of paper.
